People ask me almost daily what products I use on my hair. Or how I get my hair the way I do. Let me tell ya… this natural hair journey has been long & it’s not easy. I’ve been natural for a long time. I would say for about maybe 8 years or so. I started getting perms early in life. I always had big, long curly/wavy hair growing up. I wanted my hair to be straight so bad. I begged my Mom to get a perm. I believe I got my first one in either Junior High School or High School. Before the perms my Mom would straighten my hair with a “hot comb”. That’s what we called them back then. LOL!
My hair routine has definitely evolved since then. I don’t use heat on my hair at all. It’s been three years since I’ve had my hair straight. Honestly it just makes me nervous now. I’ve heard several horror stories from friends and friends of friends about going to certain salons & getting their hair basically scorched by blow dryers and flat irons. Nope! I’ll pass!
The products that I use are mostly from sheamoisture & camillerose. Both of these lines have numerous products to choose from. If you know your hair type along with reading labels and a bit of research you can find the exact matches for your hair type. It was trial and error for me. I’ve tried a lot of different products. I’m sure every naturalista has gone through this period. Once you do find what works for you and see the end results it’ll be all worth it.
Okay so on to my routine. I use an oil treatment on my hair weekly. I’m obsessed with SunKissAlba YouTube channel. I wanna be her when I grow up. LOL! I ran across her oil treatment video a couple years ago. I bought every single thing she used in that video. It took me a minute cause the oils are somewhat pricey. Well if you buy organic instead of the regular version of the oils. I bought the exact version of everything she had in the video. I went to a beauty supply store to buy an applicator bottle which was only like $2.00. And there you have it… hair food to make it grow. I’ll admit my hair has gotten pretty thick by using this. I’ve read that the castor oil does this & I’m okay with that.
I put this hair oil concoction in my hair before I shampoo my hair. I’ll put this in my hair then do whatever I need to do around my house…. clean, play with my dog or whatever. Usually I let it sit for at least an hour. Before I get in the shower I will massage my scalp. I know some naturals don’t mention the scalp a lot. Most are focused on the ends of the hair (which you need to be), but back in the day my Mom used to oil my scalp. So I don’t neglect that part of my hair.
How I determine which shampoo & conditioner I use depends on what my hair needs at that particular moment. If my hair is oily & feels weighted down by the products I’ve used that week I use a clarifying shampoo.
If my hair needs moisture because it’s dry then I use a combination of things. I will use the shampoos and conditioner made specifically for putting moisture back into the hair cuticles. There is a line of Kevin Murphy products that I have purchased from a salon that I use.
I also use a variety of conditioners. Conditioning natural hair is extremely important. This step will ensure to lock in moisture. As you can see the key word here is “moisture”. Some of the conditioners are pictured above. The Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus I’ve been using since that product line debut. I just purchased the Manuka Honey & Yogurt conditioner a couple of weeks ago when I was in Walmart. There are a couple of Camille Rose conditioners that I use as well. I will list them below.
After I’m done with conditioning my hair I will use a leave in conditioner. There is one in the picture on the right above… the Camille Rose Latte Define. I usually either let my hair air dry or if I’m pressed for time I will use a diffuser. I don’t have a fancy dancy diffuser, but I’m looking to purchase one soon. I have my eye on a couple of them.
If I’m not being lazy I will pineapple my hair (pineapple = high ponytail) or I will use my purple and blue flexirods. I use a regular bonnet to cover my hair. I’m also looking for a silk or satin pillow. I saw a couple on Amazon that I’m interested in. The next morning I will take my hair down & pick it out to my liking. I use a Camille Rose styler that I absolutely love. It’s really the only one I’ve been using lately. I also use the Camille Rose Growth & Shine Balm. I use this product mainly on my scalp to make sure it doesn’t get flaky or dry.
I recently just purchase a three in one steamer. It can be used for hair, skin and it can also be used as an essential oil diffuser. I used it this past Saturday night & I love it. My hair is soft, moisturized & more manageable. I purchased it on Amazon for $62.00 plus shipping. You can find it here on amazon.
I know this seems like a lot for hair, but when people compliment you or you look in the mirror & think wow my hair is so cute… it makes you feel good about yourself. And what’s wrong with feeling good about yourself for having a great hair day? Not a thing! If you have any questions about any of this you can comment on this post. I try to help my natural sister out whenever I can. Hope you enjoy this post. If you do let me know in the comments section. Have a fab day!!

Hey girl, I’m also natural, but I’m normally the woman whose curls “can’t get right’. Thanks for the product tips, although I’ve tried everything BUT the steamer, Cheers!

Hey girl!! You’re welcome! It’s taking me sometime to get my curls right lol! It’s definitely been a journey. You should try the steamer. You’ll love it!

I have naturally curly hair and clarifying shampoo is so important to me even though I only use it sparingly. Love all these tips and suggestions!
Kristie says
Yes! Clarifying shampoo helps me get all the oil out of my hair for me to put it right back in lol!!

It’s always a joy to read about how other naturals take care of their hair. Anything with hair and learning what products work for it has always been a chore for me, especially being a 4C chica with very course hair. On wash days, I always have to pree poo with oils first, then deep condition, then do the regular shampoo and conditioner. This takes up half of my day, if not the whole day lol xxx
